Katharine Houghton Hepburn was born on May 12, 1907, in Hartford. Both of Hepburn's parents were strong advocates of birth control. Katharine credited her parents for her sense of adventure and independence. Shee is considered as One of the silver screen's most unique and enduring personalities.

Her career as a leading lady spanned seven decades, over fifty quality films a record twelve Oscar nominations and four gold statuettes. She formed memorable screen partnerships with the likes of Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy and director George Cukor but outlasted all of them and excelled just as easily on her own.

After a screen debut performance in George Cukor's A BILL OF DIVORCEMENT (1932) which earned her favorable notices and the attention of Hollywood, Hepburn joined the ranks of RKO's highest paid stars and her career took off rapidly. For her third film, MORNING GLORY (1933), she won the first of her record four Best Actress Oscars for her portrayal of Eva Lovelace, an aspiring actress, opposite Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Adolphe Menjou. Several dramas soon followed with varying degrees of success, among them notables like LITTLE WOMEN (1933) in which she plays Louisa May Alcott's tomboy heroine Jo, and forgettables like THE LITTLE MINISTER (1934) and BREAK OF HEARTS (1935), both of which failed at the box office.

Katharine Hepburn continued to be active even in her old age, riding her bicycle and swimming in the ocean near her house in Old Saybrook, CT. While she was always somewhat reclusive, she appeared in public less and less as she grew older. The last few years of her life, with her health declining, she generally remained at home. Katharine Hepburn died in her home, surrounded by loved ones, on June 29, 2003, at the age of 96.

Famous Quotes of Katharine Houghton Hepburn
The calla lilies are in bloom again. Such a strange flower -- suitable to any occasion. I carried them on my wedding day, and now I place them here in memory of something that has died." --as Terry Randall in STAGE DOOR (1937).

Greta Garbo was born September 18, 1905 in Greta Lovisa Gustafsson. She was born in Stockholm to poor parents. She started working at the age of 14, first as a lather girl in a barbershop, then as a clerk in a department store and as a model.

In her first motion picture, Luffar-Petter (1922), she played a bathing beauty. From 1922 to 1924 she studied at the Royal Dramatic Theatre, Stockholm. During that period met Mauritz Stiller, the foremost Swedish director, who gave her an important role in Gösta Berlings Saga who gave her the stage name Greta Garbo, and trained her in cinema-acting techniques.

Garbo played seductive WWI spy in Mata Hari (1932). So much so that the censors complained of the revealing outfit shown on the movie poster. Her next film that year was Grand Hotel, with one of the first all star casts. The film earned MGM it’s second Best Picture Oscar.
After almost 2 years off the screen, Garbo signed a new MGM contract granting her almost total control over her films.

She exercised that control by getting leading man Laurence Olivier fired from her film, Queen Christina (1934), and forcing Mayer to replace him with former co-star and lover John Gilbert, who’s career had faltered since the coming of sound.

At age 36, after the flop of her film, Two Faced Woman (1941), Garbo withdrew from the entertainment field and retired to a secluded life in New York City. In 1954 she was awarded a special Academy Award for unforgettable performances.

Garbo died on April 15, 1990, in New York, N.Y. She was one of the most glamorous and popular stars of the motion pictures of the 1920s and '30s.

Garbo had, in the opinion of her directors and most critics, a perfect instinct for doing the right thing before the camera. Her talent, her great beauty, and her indifference to public opinion made her career unique in the history of the cinema.

Suraiya was born in Gujranwala, Punjab and was the only child of her parents. She was a dark plain looking girl and was not trained in music, however she went on to become a successful actress and singer. She debuted as a child star with Taj Mahal (1941). She did playback as a 13 year old for Mehtaab in Sharda (1942) under Naushad's direction. The barely-in-her-teens Suraiya had to stand on a stool to reach the mike!

She was lucky to star opposite the legendary
K.L. Saigal in three of his later films - Tadbir (1945), Omar Khaiyam (1946) and Parwana (1947), the last remembered for her haunting rendition of Jab Tumhi Nahin Apne.
The 1948-49 phase saw her rise to her peak. With Pyar ki Jeet (1948), Badi Bahen (1949) and Dillagi (1949) she became the highest paid female star of her time. At her peak, Suraiya generated hysteria comparable only to

Nargis was one of the greatest Indian actresses of all time. Her performances were authentic and natural to a degree not seen then in Indian Cinema, which could still be quite loud and theatrical.
She was born in Allahabad in a Muslim family and her original name was Fatima Rashid. When she was just 5 years old, her mother introduced her as a child star, Baby Rani.

Her first adult lead role was in Mehboob Khan's Taqdeer (1943) opposite Motilal. She made her presence felt in the same filmmaker's Humayun (1945) as Hamida Bano but real stardom came her way with Andaaz (1949) and Barsaat (1949). Andaaz remains one of the best triangles in Hindi Cinema with Nargis turning in a fine performance as the modern woman caught between Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor.

Mother India is the ultimate tribute to Indian Womanhood! This epic saga of the sufferings of an Indian peasant woman has an inherent and perennial appeal, being typical of the Indian situation. The film is an opulent colour remake of Mehboob's earlier austere Black and White film Aurat (1940). In fact everything about the film is highly charged right down to the strong, earthy central performance by Nargis. The film represents the pinnacle of her career and won her the Best Actress award at the prestigious Karlovy Vary festival. Mother India was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film but it lost to Fellini's Nights of Caberia by a solitary vote!

It is a well-known story that while shooting for the film, Nargis was trapped amidst lit haystacks. As the flames got higher and higher, Sunil Dutt playing her rebellious son, Birju, in the film ran through the fire and rescued her. He proposed to her and Nargis married Sunil Dutt and quit films after marriage

Famous Movie of Nargis Dutt were Aag (1948), Mela (1948), Andaaz (1949), Barsaat (1949), Babul (1950) , Jogan (1950), Awaara (1951) , Deedaar (1951), Anhonee (1952), Aah (1953) ,Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori(1956), Jagte Raho (1956), Mother India (1957), Pardesi (1957) Adalat (1958), Lajwanti (1958) and Raat Aur Din
